How to Find Cheap Flights in 3 Easy Steps

These 3 easy steps will usually get you the best price on flights. Always check:

1. Major Sites  Major travel sites will show you routes and prices for the major airlines. We've found that Kayak.com is by far the most comprehensive, but occasionally the other players such as Expedia and Travelocity will have lower prices.

Hint Watch out for booking fees! You might get a better deal by booking directly with the airline. Many travel sites tack on "booking fees" that range from $5 to $30 or more.

2. Niche Sites  Even the best major sites don't list all airlines. That's why niche sites like AirNinja.com show the routes flown by discount airlines which aren't shown on major sites. You can check which discount airlines fly your route and then book directly with the airline if it's cheaper.

Hint There are more than one hundred discount airlines throughout the the world. They're often cheaper, but many skimp on the service.

3. Travel Agents and Consolidators  These groups buy tickets in bulk and can sometimes sell them at a discount, especially on international flights. Once you get a price quote with methods one and two, try talking to your local travel agent.

A Couple More If you're a student, you might get a deal with STA travel. Also, try experimenting with different dates and nearby cities.
